 Origin ~

Chan Chi Shan Hsien Fo Temple, located at Fuguei Village, Guosing Township, Nantou County, was founded by Grand Master Huen Yuan six years after his devotion to the propagation and application of I Ching and Feng Shui. It is a place of spiritual cultivation and Buddhist practice for the followers.

Grand Master Huen Yuan started helping people through the concepts of I Ching and Feng Shui in Taichung City after he recovered from a serious illness in 1982. In those years, as people noticed the significant benefits from his consultation, many more people had come to him for Feng Shui cures and advices.

Other than the consultation on the yang-house and problems solving through the concepts, Grand Master Huen Yuan provided wisdom enlightenment blessings to children every Sunday. As always, lots of young kids accompanied by their parents lined up for blessings in each ceremony. Since this ceremonial place was small and located beside a busy street that might put the young kids in danger when they went out, a vision of building a site in a tranquil mountain area emerged in his mind.

In 1988, six years after his illness recovery, Grand Master Huen Yuan eventually found an auspicious location in Nantou County. With the support and generous donations from his followers, he purchased the land and began the construction of a temple in the following year. This piece of land is now the location of Chan Chi Shan Hsien Fo Temple

It has been 20 years since then. In addition to the headquarter, Hsien Fo Temple, there are three branch temples, San Bao Temple, Da Fan Temple and Da An Temple, and 25 sub-sites all across Taiwan. Each site offers the disciples and followers a place for Buddhist practice and learning of I Ching and Feng Shui.

Bodhisattva Wang Chan Lao Zu ~

Bodhisattva Wang Chan Lao Zu, known as Guiguzi before the enlightenment achievement, was a famous philosopher and military expert in ancient China. There are different stories regarding his background. As stated in the book of Nieng Po Fu Zhi, the real name of Guiguzi was Wang Xu who lived during the Western Chou Dynasty. Also, in the book of Zhao Gueng Wu Tan Shu Zhi, it says that he was born in the Warring States Period and became a recluse dwelling in a mountain valley called Guigu, which he named himself after, in Yieng Chuan, Yang County.

Guiguzi was known as the Sage of Wisdom in China. His book, Wu Zi Tian Shu, has been widely read by the people since then. His brilliant military strategy theory, Zongheng Xue, had great impact in the Warring States Period. He was the master of several well-known tacticians, like Sun Bin, Pang Juan, Su Qin and Zhang Yi, during that time.

The theory of Zongheng Xue is based on the concept of yin and yang, the two complementary opposite of elements in the universe. It can be seen from the contrary phenomena, such as profit and deficit, positive and negative, strong and weak, fortune and misfortune, full and empty, good and bad, etc. The interaction and balance of these two fundamental opposite forces simply create all the existing things in the cosmos. The whole interchange is manifested through I Ching, the Book of Changes, stating that the interrelation of yin (female) and yang (male) forms the eight trigrams of bagua. Therefore, all the intricate phenomena seen in the living and non-living things simply explain it all.

Basically, the military strategy of Guiguzi, the methods, tactics and theories, is in conformity with the operating principles of the universe. Its power and strength is undefeatable and unbelievably great. Indeed, it is a universal principle that can be employed in many fields, like military, politics, foreign affairs, social affairs, economy and public relations. Generally speaking, his theory mainly focuses on eight subjects which are heaven, earth, sun, moon, yin, yang, spirit and god.

His thought on the tactics was originally derived from I Ching, the ancient Chinese classic. He is the greatest philosopher, scientist and tactician in human history. His contribution has always been recognized and admired by the knowledgeable people.

Guiguzi became Bodhisattva Wang Chan Lao Zu after achieving enlightenment. He is also known as Bodhisattva Chan(Zen) Shi, Chan Shi Yie Zu and Xuan Feng Yueng Zheng Tian Zuen.

Bodhisattva Wang Chan Lao Zu is one of the Buddhas the followers worship in Chan Chi Shan Hsien Fo Temple.

There is not much trace of his dwelling. However, people believe the Guigu Cave, located at Qixian County, Henan Province, was the place where he lived and used for spiritual cultivation and Buddhist practice. At present, there is a statue of Guiguzi positioned outside the cave for the worshippers to pay their respect.

Venerable Master Huen Yuan ~

Grand Master Huen Yuan was born in January of 1943 and grew up in Jhongliao Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. His family has been farmers for generations. He is a person with warm personality and gentle nature. Ever since Grand Master Huen Yuan was a kid, he began to show great interest in learning the concepts of Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement. In order to prove to himself that the principle he learned was right, he often would put himself to the test. He completely devotes himself to the application and propagation of the concepts of I Ching and Feng Shui and never regrets his decision.

Grand Master Huen Yuan always has a joyful mind and smile on his face. He often encourages followers and disciples to stay active until they die rather than to die in sickness. He also reminds everyone to appreciate others who are like mirrors and reflect back on the mistakes that everyone should keep in mind not to make the same error in one¡¦s life. The great wisdom and patience of the Grand Master is always seen through his action by acknowledging people¡¦s favours, appreciating the favours and returning the favours. He is the inspiration and a spiritual teacher to all of his disciples.

In 1988, six years after his recovery from a serious illness and devotion to the consultations and propagation of I Ching and Feng Shui, Grand Master Huen Yuan purchased a sacred land and started the construction of Hsien Fo Temple. His goal was to establish Humanistic Pure Land Buddhism in the land of Chan Chi Shan Hsien Fo Temple. Following this establishment, San Bao Temple in Taichung County, Da Fan Temple in Hsinchu County, Da An Temple in Taipei City and Kaohsiung Site in Kaohsiung City were built in 1993, 1994, 1998 and 2002 respectively. To date, there are a total of 28 branch temples and sub-sites located in Taiwan in addition to the headquarter of Hsien Fo Temple.

The Grand Master always sees himself as a guardian of Mother Nature and encourages people to devote themselves to protect the environment as well. After more than 30 years of learning and practice, he realizes that in order to create a peaceful society, a household with a harmonious living environment will be the first step needed to be taken. Founded in 1995, the China Humanistic Pure Land Merits Association has been carrying out its main goal to bring people the awareness about the great impact of imbalance in their living surroundings and to provide them the cures and help.

Deep down in his heart, the Grand Master knows that people would need to be educated through the concept of Feng Shui to achieve a better life with well-being. Therefore, he started the broadcasting of the Feng Shui programs, like the Aspects of I Ching and Feng Shui, instructed by him, on national television more than a decade ago. From 1997 to now, more than 3,600 episodes have been aired seven days a week on TTV. With years of preparation, Wei Xin TV established by Grand Master Huen Yuan has begun airing from January of 2009 with Feng Shui programs running 24 hours a day for the viewers.

Thousands of disciples have embraced Grand Master Huen Yuan as a spiritual guide and teacher and have taken the I Ching and Feng Shui classes under a regional master. In addition, the number of people who has taken the advantage of the programs broadcasted on the media is countless. All of these are only the beginning of the Grand Master¡¦s goal to pursue world peace.
